ACE ProgramClear Creek Intermediate School students who participate in the Afterschool Centers for Education (ACE) program extended their new knowledge of the Galveston Bay ecosystem into works of art that now line the entrance of the home of the Jaguars.

Through a partnership with Artist Boat and Education Program Manager, Amanda Rinehart, the students have been learning about the coastal ecosystem, conservation efforts and the bay’s importance to various industries. The students then created benches adorned with a mosaic of their own hand-painted ceramic tiles that depict various scenes and natural landscapes of Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel. Artist Boat is a non-profit dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the discipline of the sciences and the arts.

ACE students recently hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony and recognized many contributing partners to mark the culmination of this unique collaboration. Click here to view photos of the benches and ribbon cutting ceremony.

“This very special program benefits from partnerships with many generous local businesses who add to the experiences for the students,” said ACE Site Director, Heidi Cisneros. “Our students even had the opportunity to experience Galveston Bay up close through coastal field trips and kayaking on the bay.”

The ACE program is made possible through the Texas Education Agency and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative of the U.S. Department of Education. Students enrolled in the ACE program experience hands-on enrichment activities designed to reinforce and complement the students’ academic programs. ACE also aims to improve school attendance and engagement in learning.
